Brother Solano Stephens, O.S.F.
A native of Dublin, Brother Solano (William Stephens) entered Mount Bellow at the age of sixteen. The following year, on July 17, 1891, he came to St. Francis Monastery and received the Habit on August 2nd. On September 8, 1892 he was professed. During his fifty years of teaching, Brother Solano was engaged in the following schools: St. Anthony's, St. Vincent's, Our Lady of Mercy, St. Joseph's, St. Anne's, Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. John's, St. Leonard's Academy, and lastly St. Francis Preparatory where for many years he taught commercial subjects and French. It was here that Brother was greatly respected by the students for his kindliness and subtle wit. Though in poor health during the latter years, Brother Solano remained at his post until one week before his death on March 6, 1942.
