Each of us is called to be a prophet by virtue of our Baptism, and a prophet is one who speaks for God. We may not be prophetic by what we say, as Elijah and John the Baptist were. But we are prophetic by how we live our lives, caring for God’s creation and reaching out to those most in need whenever and wherever we find them, and striving always to be peacemakers.
Do we stand up for what we believe? As followers of Francis we profess to be aware of those who find life difficult (the “minores”). Then how is it that I can so easily walk past my parish soup kitchen on Saturday mornings after Mass and not walk in to offer the “lay” volunteers a hand? What can I do in school to let the not so popular students know that they are important to me?
Our choices are limitless. During this time of Advent may we be as prophetic as our God calls us to be. In this way we will be preparing ourselves and our world for the coming of the Savior with his gift of Peace.
