The Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas

1Jn 2:3-11; Ps 96:1-2, 2-3, 5-6; Lk 2:22-35

Simeon. What a perfect embodiment of Advent. His whole life spent waiting for “the Christ of the Lord.” Do you think he only lived in the future? Did he live in his own present? How do we do both?

I have three grandchildren. The oldest is seven, the youngest, two. I absolutely adore them all. I love seeing who they are today, and I can only imagine who they will become. They are so filled with possibility. I can’t wait to see them grow up. I wonder how much of it I’ll be around to witness.
Simeon realized that he was only witness to the beginning of the story. This is so true for all of us. The story of the Christ, while already written, continues to grow and change, so filled with possibility.
May we recognize our children and grandchildren as the blessings they are. We have so much to learn from them.
